5 Must-Know Facts About Blue Exorcist: The Ultimate Demon Hunting Series!

Blue Exorcist or Ao no Exorcist is an action and fantasy anime series with mythological themes, adapted from a shounen manga that has been published since 2009. The series centers on the concept of exorcism or demon banishment, where fans are introduced to several powerful characters, both from the human and demon sides.

1. Manga by Kazue

Blue Exorcist originated from a shounen manga written and illustrated by Kazue Katou, a mangaka born in 1980 who made her debut in 2000 with a one-shot manga. Later, Katou created her first complete manga series in 2005 titled “Robo to Usakichi,” which concluded two years later.

Blue Exorcist became one of Katou’s most phenomenal works. The manga has been published by Shueisha since April 4, 2009, and remains ongoing to this day. Besides writing and illustrating her own manga, Kazue Katou also played a crucial role in the anime Godzilla Singular Point, where she was responsible for character design.

2. Anime Adaptation by A-1 Pictures

In November 2010, Shueisha’s Jump Square announced the Blue Exorcist anime adaptation through their official website. Along with this announcement, they revealed the production staff lineup. Among them was A-1 Pictures studio, which played a vital role in animating Ao no Exorcist. Notably, this anime studio has produced many popular anime series, including Sword Art Online, Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Fairy Tail, and others.

The first Blue Exorcist anime aired from April 17, 2011, to October 2 of the same year, running for 25 episodes. Its premiere was actually delayed from the original schedule due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan at that time.

3. Manga’s Hiatus Period

The Blue Exorcist manga went on hiatus on July 1, 2021. This was because mangaka Kazue Katou planned to focus on a manga project adapting Fuyumi Ono’s novel “Eizen Karukaya Kaiitan.” After a lengthy break, the manga finally resumed publication on May 2, 2022, about a month later than initially planned.

4. Long Wait for Anime Sequels

Fans who exclusively follow the anime version of Blue Exorcist have had to exercise considerable patience while waiting for new sequels. For the second season alone, fans had to wait approximately 5 years. Blue Exorcist Season 2 premiered on January 7, 2017, and concluded on March 25, 2017.

Then, Blue Exorcist Season 3 was released after more than 6 years of hiatus. This sequel, titled “Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Saga,” first aired on January 7, 2024, and is scheduled to run for 12 episodes.

5. Third Season Production by Studio VOLN

There’s a notable change in Blue Exorcist’s third season, as the production studio switched from A-1 Pictures to Studio VOLN. However, this change in studios doesn’t necessarily mean a decrease in animation quality.

In fact, Studio VOLN, which was established in August 2014, has produced several popular anime titles, including “I Want to Eat Your Pancreas,” “Ushio to Tora,” “Karakuri Circus,” and others.
